In the church, we have an incredible document called The Family: A Proclamation to the World. The first paragraph in this document says,
"We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children."
This first paragraph sets the whole mood of the proclamation. It gives us our outline of what marriage should be: One man, and one woman. The world today is struggling so bad with this concept. Gay marriage is now legal, and our church has gotten A LOT of flack for not supporting it.
Something that a lot of people ask us Mormons is "Why don't you guys support gays and lesbians? Doesn't God love everyone? Shouldn't we NOT judge others?" The answer is yes.. God loves all of His children, and yes.. we are taught to not judge others. But these two things have absolutely NOTHING to do with our belief in keeping marriage between a man and woman.
To expand on this, I am going to quote the second paragraph of the proclamation,
"All human beings-male and female-are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose."
So, in short, God has made marriage between a man and a woman because we are made into these genders for a certain reason! If we were all meant to be the same and love someone the same as us, why would He create two different genders? Why not just create all males? Or all females?
Woman was created for the purpose of baring and nurturing her children, and taking care of the home. She was created to be her husband's support system, helping hand, and other half. Men are created to preside and provide for his family. He makes sure the needs of his wife and children are met, there's a roof over their heads, and they have food on the table. He was made to be his wives other half. Men don't bare children, and women don't hold the priesthood. So yes, both are necessary in a home.
In Moses we are taught how women were created, literally from the rib of Adam. Chapter 3 of Moses states..
21 And I, the Lord God, caused a deep sleep to fall upon
Adam; and he slept, and I took one of his ribs and closed
up the flesh in the stead thereof;
22 And the rib which I, the Lord God, had taken from
man, made I a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 And Adam said: This I know now is bone of my
bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his
mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; andthey shall be
one flesh.
It truly is such a simple commandment and concept that our world has twisted into such a complicated thing. Marriage, in the eyes of God, should be between a man and a woman.
Here is a conference talk from Elder D. Todd Christofferson to help prove my point. :) Enjoy!
